#9980 new defect

Dockstar "Uncompressing Linux... unexpected EOF"

Reported by: das-iro@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: kernel Version: Trunk
Keywords: dockstar kirkwood uncompressed Cc:

Description

When using a trunk snapshot or my own compile, the kernel is uncompressing itself but it is not compressed (guess) - leading into a halt.

I updated the boot loader to trunk, but no change.

Hi!
I've the same problem here with the OpenRD Ultimate board. This is the same CPU (Kirkwood 88F6281).

What I discovered so far:

Every time I Build the kernel the resulting uImage has a different size. And sometimes everything works without changing the configuration.
Sometime make clean helps in between.
For me that looks like a race condition building the Kernel/uImage.
It's strange that it looks like only people using the Marvell Kirkwood CPU are facing that problem.

I'm building OpenWRT on Ubuntu using 8 cores in parallel (-j8) but only using 1 core doesn't change that problem.
Unfortunately I don't really know where I should search for the problem.

Same problem with the snapshot @ http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/kirkwood/ as of Sep6.

Sounds similar to https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=30496 . Possibly related to LZMA?

I had the same problem after compiling my own initramfs (lzma) image with trunk r28368.

Recompiling the image from scratch after a make target/linux clean seemed to cure the problem. Note that the size of the new image is smaller.

Uncompressing Linux... done, booting the kernel.

However, after several builds the problem came back again.
