WAP54G - upon installation will not allow initial setup of password creation

Reported by: cmoakes@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: 1.0-rc5
Component: base system Version: 1.0
Keywords: Password will not change Cc:

Description

After successfully installing the openwrt on a linksys wap54g ver. 3 it would not allow me to set a password with the initial gui interface. the following is the error that was created.

Changing password for root
Enter the new password (minimum of 5, maximum of 8 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Enter new password:
Re-enter new password:
passwd: An error occurred updating the password file.

/bin/sh: cannot create /etc/httpd.conf: Read-only file system
/bin/sh: cannot create /etc/httpd.conf: Read-only file system

Therefore I am unable to go into any of the configuration of the access point. The reason that I was wanting to try this software was to boost the range on the router, is this function available and how would I activate it.

The WAP54G typically only has 2M of flash, not enough space for the jffs2 partition required for a writable filesystem. This is a known issue and partially addressed in the rc4 release with the creation of a 'micro' set which includes on the required packages. Unfortunately, while the micro set does have more free space, it's still not enough.

As for transmit power, see http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=3474
