I am currently using an Ubiquiti Routerstation Pro, with a Mikrotik R52n card.

I noticed that ath9k in ad-hoc mode is not working at 802.11n rates, the maximum link speed achieved is 54Mbit/s.

This is a well known problem outside of the scope of OpenWrt. 11n rates for IBSS mode must be implemented in mac80211 first until they will hit the drivers eventually. I suggest to follow linux wireless if you're in need of this.
