#9085 new defect

ping fails to resolve

Reported by: scott.openwrt@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: packages Version: Backfire 10.03.1 RC4
Keywords: Cc:

I am using OpenWrt Backfire 10.03.1-rc4 on a TP-link WR1043ND.

I have an IPv6 address from my ISP and can talk native IPv6 to their servers and the internet, I also use the IPv6 DNS servers.

If, while logged into the openwrt router itself, I setup /etc/resolv.conf to point to my ISPs IPv6 DNS servers and ping it fails. works fine. Looking at the tcpdump of this I see that we ask the DNS server over UDP, it replies saying that the message is truncated. According to the RFC openwrt should then send the same DNS query to the DNS server over TCP, however, there is no sign on this in the tcpdump trace.

I am guessing that ping uses the uclibc gethostbyname implementation, and so I guess that that doesn't support retrying over TCP.
