Can you test brcm-2.4? I suspect it might have serial flash, and support for that is only present there, not in bcm47xx.

Yes, 2.4 works, but backfire is last release that support 2.4 kernel. It will by nice support serial flash in brcm47xx.

Okay, then use brcm-2.4 for backfire. Serial flash support for brcm47xx will be eventually added in trunk, the tracking ticket for that is #7246.
