#8542 closed defect (fixed)

various hangs with extroot (mini_fo) using ext4

Reported by: cshore Owned by: cshore
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: base system Version: Trunk
Keywords: Cc:

passwd and sudo hang when using extroot with an ext4 filesystem (possibly more generally the ext4 module).

passwd hangs after the password is entered and reentered - i.e. when the /etc/passwd is to be updated.

sudo hangs before prompting for password.

This is probably a problem with mini_fo combined with the ext4 filesystem module. (I don't think it is the actual filesystem used that matters).

extroot is a widely used feature and needs to work, so ext4 needs to work with mini_fo before we switch to ext4 only.

Assigning to kaloz because he wants ext4 module only .

Note that this is with nobarrier and ext4 created with no journalling.

  • Owner changed from kaloz to cshore
  • Status changed from new to assigned

Note that someone who actually cares about extroot should look into this. Personally I've never seen a real reason why would this be better then chrooting to the external storage.

Do you mean running passwd on a recent trunk build using ext4?

  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from assigned to closed

fixed two ways: a mutex deadlock was fixed in mini_fo, and in 2.6.37 kernels we use overlayfs not mini_fo.
