#7992 closed defect (fixed)

Wi-Fi: attempt to use HT40 channels completely kills device (Atheros AR5416 + UBNT RS).

Reported by: User294 <t3st3r@…> Owned by: nbd
Priority: highest Milestone: Backfire 10.03.1
Component: base system Version: Backfire 10.03.1 RC2
Keywords: Cc:

Description

Looks like I found why my RS locks up.

Configuration is: Ubiquity RouterStation + Atheros AR5416 based wi-fi card.

To reproduce:

Try to enable HT40 channels in web interface.

Result:

When you're about to apply these settings, device will lock up. What worse, even reboot will not help as device will not respond anymore.

I'm strongly suspect that wi-fi driver crashes and then crash even repeats on next boot, causing a major trouble as I can't easily access to device anymore. Looks like some hint needed. How can I debug this and get panic message or so? Will serial cable do the trick? And is it ok that kernel reports it is tainted by ath_hal module?

P.S. btw, there is no Backfire 10.03.1 RC3 as version in Version field of Track. So I'm filling it using 10.03.1 RC2 instead.

Yes a serial console would be helpful.
Post the crash log here.

Ok, then I have to assemble serial cable. Will take couple of hours or so.

comment:3 Changed 7 years ago by nbd

You could also check if there is something in /sys/kernel/debug/crashlog after the reboot

comment:4 Changed 7 years ago by User294 <t3st3r@…>

...done. Some observations:
1) No, looks like kernel does NOT crashes and wi-fi driver is ok. Nice! But...
2) But creating serial cable wasn't a waste of time. I still figured out very strange problem which can't be debugged anyhow else but via serial cable.

When I'm about to apply new network settings for wi-fi card using HT40 channels, things are going really strange. Web face begins to reload network. Then things are going very strange. Web face never finishes it's reload. Technically, I can still ping my the device. But nothing more than that. There is absolutely NO any listening sockets inside the device. So, I'm unable to access device via ssh or web - device just refuses connections to closed ports. Technically, device is alive but there is no networked daemons to control it. So I can only debug this via serial console anyway. I'm about to list processes and sockets.

Is there anything else which could be useful to understand what's the problem? As for me, appearance of /sbin/wifi up looks suspicious. Shouldn't it terminate after bringing interface up?

Argh. I actually got this wi-fi related OOPS while investigating things so actually it's here. Dunno why it hasn't appeared at first try. And yeah, it happens when wi-fi is attempted to initialize with certain settings (seems to be HT40 related). This oops can occur both when web face reloads the network and upon next boot. Then device misbehaves.

Well, finally I finished investigating this bug for now. This problem occurs when you're about to use HT40 channels.
It does not occurs if you're using 20MHz channels. Two scenarios can take place when this bug happens.
In one case, OOPS is not displayed but looks like "/bin/sh /sbin/wifi up" hangs forever and there is no networked daemons.
In other case there is OOPS occurs in the same time during same actions.
Result is roughly the same (no networked daemons but responce to ping) but in this case serial console hangs and no longer accepts commands as "bonus".
If user uses "save and apply" when selecting HT40 mode, issue (either oops or script lock-up) would also reappear upon reboot.
Then user can't access device due to lack of network daemons (no SSH, uhttpd, dnsmasq, etc).

Crash always occurs in kernel process phy0. This seems to be some ath9k bug.
Yet another OOPS, seems to be a bit more verbose as it includes hostapd as well.

I'm seeing this or a simular segfault on a RSPro with an AR5416 card. However it's not jnust related to HT mode, any changes in wireless settings can trigger this.

Please recompile with CONFIG_KERNEL_KALLSYMS enabled in your openwrt .config, then post an updated crash log

After today's changes to compat wireless(trunk),I cannot reproduse the Databus error posted above anymore. (RSPro and AR5416)
I have changed channels between different ht40 modes gn/an atleast 20 times and no error. Uhttpd restarts sometimes, but thats another issue.
Great work ndb ! :)
