using http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03/ar71xx/openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr841nd-v5-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin this firmware
additional installs include kmod-ath9k and hostapd-mini

just installed http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03/ar71xx/openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr741nd-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin and so far everything seems fine.
Haven't installed kmod-ath9k or hostapd-mini yet.

installed kmod-ath9k and hostapd-mini on the 741nd image and all seems well.

Can you try retesting with the wr841nd v5 image from 10.03.1-rc3? Some ethernet driver changes were merged that may resolve this issue.
