#7195 closed defect (invalid)

Failsafe doesn't work on asus wl-500gp

Reported by: exxon Owned by: hauke
Priority: normal Milestone: Chaos Calmer 15.05
Component: base system Version: Trunk
Keywords: wl-500gp failsafe Cc:

Description

Tried both backfire brcm-2.4 and brcm47xx.
both just send UDP packet "Please" and that's it. router is not pingable and doesn't accept connections.

using most recent build it sends proper message "press reset now to enter failsafe" and responds with "entering failsafe" once it's pressed, but still not accessible.

sniffer doesn't show any packets coming from router except these 2.

Which switch port are you connected to. The failsafe mode uses only internal port0. What port that is labelled as on the outside of the router (WAN, LAN1-4) depends on the router model is not able to be determined programatically so you should try each ethernet jack. The use of a single port is to prevent package leakage which would occur if the switch were connected as a single ethernet device for all ports (and the network settings are not available at failsafe time, in part because the possibility of bad settings is one of the reasons for failsafe mode.

I confirm this bug on Backfire 10.03 (official release as far as I remember - it says so on LuCI's login page).

At startup a UDP broadcast packet is sent from 192.168.1.1 containing only the word "Please". When either EZ or Reset button is pressed at that moment, the router's power led starts flashing fast in about 20 seconds.

I can't telnet to the router then, tried all ethernet ports. No traffic whatsoever, not even ARP responses. Tried to force correct ARP entry to kernel ARP table, to no avail. Tried even set client address to a few random ones from 192.168.1.0/24.

Except the first (malformed?) UDP packet, there is absolutely no traffic from the router.

On my Asus WL-500GP failsafe is working and I get an Ethernet connection over the WAN port.

I confirm this for Asus wl-500gP v1, brcm47xx, backfire 10.03.

Only "Please" UDP packet sent, not pingable except for one or two times when ping has been received. Tried all ethernet ports. When button pressed, PWR led starts flashing fast. No ping, telnet or tftp available.

10.03 is old. The issue has been fixed later.
