WRT160NL bricked no failsafe mode

Reported by: proyectoincomppa@… Owned by: developers
Priority: highest Milestone: Backfire 10.03-rc2
Component: base system Version: Backfire 10.03 Beta
Keywords: wrt160nl bricked Cc:

After installing beta version of backfire (openwrt-ar71xx-wrt160nl-squashfs.bin) and upload wifi modules (kmod-ath9k) and lucy, router bricked at reboot (power light blinks right at powering on the router).

No failsafe mode, and all ports are filtered.

Tried the following with fixed ip address in my laptop (

  • Holding the reset button during boot for 15 seconds.
  • Push the reset button when all lights blink
  • Push the reset after two seconds of the boot.
  • Push the WPS and reset button during boot for 15 seconds.
  • Push the WPS and reset button several times during boot.
  • Listening on UDP port 4919 (nc -l -v -p 4919 -u) did not work.
  • Tried to upload new firmware via SCP (timed out)

For all the cases i can't telnet, no IP responding. nmap with -PN and -p switches recognizes the router.

This problem occours with new versions of the bootloader in the wrt160nl.
It should be fixed with r20522-r20526 which is in rc2 and later.
You have to use tftp to transfere a new image.
