#5262 closed defect (wontfix)

missing dependencies for libgcc

Reported by: rio@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: base system Version: Kamikaze 8.09
Keywords: Cc:

packages like mtd and others that use libgcc should have libgcc in their dependency lists.

the user might accidently build an image without libgcc, and there are not dependecies that prevent the user from doing so. what you get is a non-functional firmware image with even mtd not working to flash a new image

Even with the dependency added you can still deselect libgcc and libc in menuconfig leading to a not working image. No idea why this is or how to fix this but I just ended up with a bricked device due to this.

You can also deselect busybox and end up with a bricked device, or deselect uci and end up with a bricked device, ...

So why again do we have a dependency system in the first place?
Because we want to prevent something like this.
It should be a dependency of basefile if we need it for the basefiles.
If we only need it for half the programs it should only be a dependency for half the packages.
Being just optional or select by default is definitely not the right way to do it.

Also, (but I may be wrong with this) the makefile already contains the dependency on libgcc for all platforms but TARGET_avr32 and TARGET_coldfire. Why this is not respected by the Imagebuilder is beyond me. Maybe this a entirely new bug?

Imagebuilder? The Imagebuilder has no make menuconfig.

Additionaly, there is no point in making every package depend on libc, thats like specifying a dependency on "kernel" and "hardware". If you deselect random stuff in the base system section you're expected to know what you're doing. Its *Base System* for a reason.
