8.09 trunk on x86 2.6.28 breaks ide support

Description

I'm running the latest trunk on x86 and the makefile using the new 2.6.28 kernel breaks loading ide devices on booting. Hence I cannot mount the root device, going back to 2.6.27.13 fixes the problem (just an edit in the Makefile for the x86 target)

Any suggestions why, since the configuration of the kernel seems to be identical?

Regards,

Lennart

i have the same problem, going back to 2.6.27.13 works fine

can comfirm the problem here. the difference between the working and non-working kernel is the lack of IDE_DISK which got replaced by IDE_GD. IDE_GD doesn't seem to recognise either the IDE channel or the CF card.

I've found a workaround (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ide/37043):

appending 'ide_generic.probe_mask=0x11' to the kernel parameters did work for me.

should also work other alix users. but there is more geode lx800 hardware out there.

I have been successfully been using this patch with 2.6.28.2 to provide /dev/hda

I have another solution which is better and does not need any kernel patches:

Do a "make kernel_menuconfig"
go to "device drivers".
Select "serial ATA and parallesl ATA" to be linked in the kernel.
Enter the "serial ATA ..." menu.

Select "ATA SFF support"
Select "CS5536 PATA support"

Go back to "Device Drivers"
Enter "SCSI device support"
Select "SCSI disk support" to be linked to the kernel.

You may disable "ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support" in "Device Drivers" now.

As the device names change from "hda" to "sda" now you have to edit the boot options:

"make menuconfig"

Go to "Target Images"
Change "/dev/hda2" to "/dev/sda2"

Remains a single problem for which I don't have a nice solution yet:
"kmod-usb-storage" depends on "kmod-scsi-core" which cannot be build anymore as it is now linked in the kernel.

To fix it you have to remove that dependancy to build your image:

  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from new to closed

An even more simple option is it to do "svn update" as I activated "AMD and nVidia IDE support" with the last commit which works for my alix board.

How is this fixed? Shouldnt you be fixing the source tree rather than creating an obscure patch that nobody knows about?

Hi there,

I tried the latest master with "AMD and nVideia IDE support" built into the kernel but had no lucking on an evo t30. I am currently trying to build it with Kernel version 2.6.27.13 again.

Greetings,

Lennart
