Rather add support for it as a LED module, possibly by extending the existing NET48xx driver.

Certainly; however I couldn't find any code for that, apart from ancient drivers for 2.4 kernels.

If you boot a net4501 with a 'Soekris' OpenWrt profile (for net48xx), dmesg shows:

nsc_gpio initializing
i2c /dev entries driver
leds_net48xx: Unknown symbol scx200_gpio_ops
scx200_gpio: no SCx200 gpio present
scx200_wdt: NatSemi SCx200 Watchdog Driver
scx200_i2c: no SCx200 gpio pins available

So the existing gpio driver doesn't even detect the SC520's GPIO.

BTW, the net4501's hardware manual is available here:

There are 8 GPIO pins brought out to a header (programmable as input or output), and the ninth is wired to the LED.
