#2595 closed enhancement (fixed)

[PATCH] build cpio.gz root filesystem for ramdisk

Reported by: b.candler@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: packages Version:

The attached patch allows kamikaze (and imagebuilder) to generate .cpio.gz root filesystem images.

These are extremely useful with a 2.6 kernel because you can pass them as an initrd and they will be unpacked directly into the initramfs. This works for both pxeboot and grub/syslinux boots.

This is more flexible than the existing 'ramdisk' target, because you can use the imagebuilder to generate new root filesystems quickly with a desired selection of packages (whereas if you select the 'ramdisk' target, the imagebuilder is disabled entirely; you're forced to use the full build environment, and build a new kernel which embeds the ramdisk)

For more info about initramfs see
