QCA9880 firmware is on a separate package in last releases, so you must run:

opkg update
opkg install ath10k-firmware-qca988x

opkg update
opkg install ath10k-firmware-qca988x

The kernel sees the card now, but no connection can be made.

dmesg still gives me this:

which region do you select? try with 'US'

Got it working.
Reflashed the rom and installed ath10k-firmware-qca988x. Phone sees the 5G network and is able to connect to it. Dmesg still shows the same errors/warnings, so don't know what that's about.

Thanks for your help :)

5 GHz works, indeed. Yet ethtool -i wlan1 returns as follows:
driver: ath9k
version: 4.1.20
firmware-version: N/A
expansion-rom-version:
bus-info: qca955x_wmac
supports-statistics: yes
supports-test: no
supports-eeprom-access: no
supports-register-dump: no
supports-priv-flags: no

Somehow it loads ath9k, not ath10k driver.

Why "option path" is 'platform/qca955x_wmac'? This is supposed to be 988X device?

I doubt that ath9k can work stable and use full capabilities of ath10k.

You are looking at the ieee80211n wifi part which is done with qca955x. There is no wifi card that works with ath9k and at10k, because the devices have a different design.
