#21389 reopened defect

Cannot flash Linksys RE6500 binary

Reported by: starkgj18@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: base system Version: Chaos Calmer 15.05
Keywords: Cc:

Description

Tried compile the binary by my own and the binary file from downloads.openwrt.org. None of them works, the OEM page refused to flash the .bin file. It says the file is crapped at around 24~49% upload progress. If it reaches 49% it acturally freeze the router and the router will become unaccessable for a while. The wiki page is rather short, making it hard to determine the proper way to flash RE6500, or if the OEM upgrade is even supported.

You have to use the bootloader to flash:

in worst case: flash with external programmer (costs just 3$ with free worldwide shipment)

I spend a lot of time and finally got it work. I hocked it to my raspberry pi, and ssh to the pi to operate the flash. The boodloader operation did not go so well, but after I erased the flash, next time I boot I saw a Linksys emergency flash page. I guess this is kind of emergency page that build into the bootloader, as it does not have enough space to do their OEM firmware check, so I flashed the OpenWRT in then :D

I'm still confusing why I only saw one radio in wireless through, as the router was able to do imultaneous dual band, and now I saw only one radio, either run in 2.4G or 5G, but not both.

Correction, I only see the 5G radio, the 2.4G radio is gone after flash to OpenWRT.

Replying to anonymous:

after flashing, try to reset settings to factory from luci

Nothing happens. I can still see only radio0.

RE6500 uses Mediatek MT7602 to handle 2.4GHz, and MT7612 for 5G. Do we not have a proper MT7602 driver? What is the package name for MT7602, as I cannot find any package by search eigher MT7602 or 7612. I'm on Chaos Calmer 15.05 version by the way.

I found kmod-mt76 package, it says the package is up-to-date.

you erased flash? did you flash back factory partition?

comment:11 Changed 2 years ago by anonymous

I think I erased factory partition and flashed OpenWRT in. Now everything but WLAN is functional so I don't think partition is the problem.
