#20699 new defect

usb hdd resets every 1000+ secs

Reported by: daggs@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: kernel Version: Chaos Calmer 15.05
Keywords: Cc:

Description

I have an external case for 3.5' hdd with a 3tb hdd in it (partition table is GPT) connected via usb to the my router (TL-WDR4300).

the mounts are visible in the router and I can mount them without any problem.
the issue is that every 1000+ secs the usb gets reseted and the mount becomes stale.

this issue isn't reproducible on a linux server with kernel 4.2.3 but does reproduces on a streamer with kernel 3.18.10 with a usb hdd (2.5' hdd) of 500gb (partition table is MBR) so there is a good possibility that 3.18.xx tree kernel has a bug.

see router log snippet: https://bpaste.net/show/29208131c23d

could it be usb power issues?

Replying to anonymous:

could it be usb power issues?

I highly doubt it, as said before it is a 3.5' hdd in side a case.
such drives require external power source and the case does have it.

I can try to connect an external powered usb hub but I don't understand how it differs.

You're more than likely running into power issues trying to drive a 3.5" off USB, especially on a router that has a very limited PSU to being with. A powered USB-hub should help here.
