Description

Hi .*!

I'm very pleased to run Kamikaze 7.06 on my neat Linksys WRTG-54GL.

There is only a very small issue regarding the available channels on the
WLAN interface wl0.

Although iwlist shows me the list of available channels:

root@stalker:~# iwlist wl0 channel
wl0 14 channels in total; available frequencies :
          Channel 01 : 2.412 GHz
          Channel 02 : 2.417 GHz
          Channel 03 : 2.422 GHz
          Channel 04 : 2.427 GHz
          Channel 05 : 2.432 GHz
          Channel 06 : 2.437 GHz
          Channel 07 : 2.442 GHz
          Channel 08 : 2.447 GHz
          Channel 09 : 2.452 GHz
          Channel 10 : 2.457 GHz
          Channel 11 : 2.462 GHz
          Channel 12 : 2.467 GHz
          Channel 13 : 2.472 GHz
          Channel 14 : 2.484 GHz
          Current Channel:6

This looks right because in europe it is perfectly to use a channel above 11.
Anyway if I try to set a channel above 11 it will refuse the request with:

root@stalker:~# iwconfig wl0 channel 12
Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) :
SET failed on device wl0 ; Invalid argument.
root@stalker:~# iwconfig wl0 channel 13
Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) :
SET failed on device wl0 ; Invalid argument.
root@stalker:~# iwconfig wl0 channel 14
Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) :
SET failed on device wl0 ; Invalid argument.

As far as I know the (US american) FCC regulations the prohibit frequrencies above 2.462 GHz
(channel 11) but this is a "european model" and in the european countries (Germany in this
case) the FCC rules do not apply and it is perfectly legal to use frequencies up to 2.484 GHz.

I'm not sure if this is an issue in the wl driver or in the iwconfig.

The system (Linksys WRTG54-GL) is running:

root@stalker:~# cat /etc/openwrt_version
7.06

with the "brcm-2.4" flavor.

If you need further informations feel free to drop me an email and I will respond
as soon as possible.

So long,

Andreas.

P.S.: OpenWrt is really cool ;)

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

Setting the channel should be done in /etc/config/wireless. The broadcom driver does not support all wireless-tools calls, thus the error your meet.
