ar71xx: low performance with MacBook

Reported by: BasicXP Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: kernel Version: Trunk
Keywords: ar71xx, wireless, macbook Cc: openwrt@…

Description

Two router models that I have tested (Netgear WNDR3800 and WNDR4300) exhibit low performance with a MacBook Pro 15 Retina Early 2015 which has a BCM4331 wireless card installed.

The next is true for WNDR3800. The download/upload speeds are approximately 10 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 25-30 Mbps on 5 GHz. According to the connection menu on the Mac, the 5 GHz connection is established with MCS 14-15 (243-270 Mbps), yet the speeds are very low. Other devices work much faster from the same location relatively to the access point.

This is how the access point sees my Mac:

Station xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (on wlan1)
	inactive time:	0 ms
	rx bytes:	317618
	rx packets:	2333
	tx bytes:	615281
	tx packets:	1558
	tx retries:	56
	tx failed:	5
	signal: -62 [-64, -68] dBm
	signal avg:	-61 [-62, -67] dBm
	tx bitrate:	270.0 MBit/s MCS 15 40MHz
	rx bitrate:	270.0 MBit/s MCS 15 40MHz
	expected throughput:	57.275Mbps
	authorized:	yes
	authenticated:	yes
	preamble:	long
	WMM/WME:	yes
	MFP: yes
	TDLS peer:	no

Tested on trunk r45581.
