#18789 new defect

After update can not set power to 24dBm

Reported by: danielsokolowski Owned by: developers
Priority: response-needed Milestone: Chaos Calmer 15.05
Component: packages Version: Trunk
Keywords: Cc:

I have just upgraded 'OpenWrt Barrier Breaker r40890' to 'OpenWrt Chaos Calmer r44048' and lost the ability to set txpower to 24dBm where previously I could.

I have two routers the old still works as expected as seen in the screen shot.

Can not set power past 20dBm in 'Chaos Calmer'

Using command line does work but only up to 20dBm, anything after that has no effect but no error is shown either.

ex: iwconfig wlan0 txpower 19 shows 19dBm in Luci but iwconfig wlan0 txpower 23 just still shows 20dBm.

Reverted to Barrier Breaker and can confirm I can set txpower to 23dBm as before, and options displayed show up to 30dBm.

  • Priority changed from high to response-needed

Can you also confirm the the actual output power is 23dBm? Power level handling in older mac80211 is quite broken and the number reported by software often does not reflect the actual hardware level.

You also forgot to mention what kind of device you're using

try to change the country.
I had this same problem with a 901nd. was using bolivia and using 24dbm and about two weeks ago or so I compiled a new trunk version and couldn't set to more than 20dbm. changed country to US and now I can set 24dbm on channel 6 and 23dbm on the other channels.

Sorry this went to my Junk folder - I have resolved that issue now. The only confirmation I had was I could no longer see the neighbor devices connected - I assumed they weren't able to see my wifi any more - when I reverted back they were seen again. I could do a further test however I feel confident it was actual power difference.

The device is DIR-835 which I have purchased because it had same wifi chip as TP-1035 which was able to transmit at 24dBm - wikidev search

That's interesting about switching it back to country US because I had it set as BO (bolivia) so that it would let me set it past 20dBm

Confirmed - I have a WNDR3700 and just tried the RC3, the max. power I can set is 17dBm on the 2,4 and 5 Ghz radios, regardless of country setting. Will revert to Barrier Breaker.

WNDR4300 with 'Barrier Breaker' I could set 2,4 GB power Output up to 30dbm , with 'Chaos Calmer' I only can set up to 22dbm.

Same problem here. Could set 30dbm, can now set only 19dbm max.
