#18405 new defect

Auto channel doesn't work with different country code

Reported by: katananja Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Chaos Calmer 15.05
Component: other Version: Trunk
Keywords: Cc:

Description

TP-Link TL-WDR4300 v1, trunk r43375.

If the country code is changed from US to BR (Brazil) on the MAC80211 802.11bgn (radio0) 2.4GHz and the channel settings is set to "auto", some devices can't connect like a PS3 or my wife ACER computer (BROADCOM BCM43225).

Looks like the SSID is not broadcasting, if you manually try to connect, nothing happens, also nothing show up on the system log. If you revert the country code to "US" all connections start to work again.

Setting the country code to "BR" and manually setting the channel to any but "auto" also works.

config wifi-device 'radio0'
	option type 'mac80211'
	option path 'platform/ar934x_wmac'
	list ht_capab 'LDPC'
	list ht_capab 'SHORT-GI-20'
	list ht_capab 'SHORT-GI-40'
	list ht_capab 'TX-STBC'
	list ht_capab 'RX-STBC1'
	list ht_capab 'DSSS_CCK-40'
	option frag '2346'
	option rts '2346'
	option hwmode '11g'
	option htmode 'HT20'
	option txpower '18'
	option country 'BR'
	option channel 'auto'

config wifi-iface
	option device 'radio0'
	option mode 'ap'
	option ssid '--erased--'
	option macfilter 'allow'
	option key '--erased--'
	option network 'lan'
	list maclist '--erased--'
	list maclist '--erased--'
	option encryption 'psk2'
root@Aguia:~# iwinfo wlan0 info
wlan0 ESSID: "--erased--"
          Access Point: --erased--
Mode: Master Channel: 13 (2.472 GHz)
          Tx-Power: 18 dBm Link Quality: unknown/70
          Signal: unknown Noise: -74 dBm
          Bit Rate: unknown
          Encryption: WPA2 PSK (CCMP)
          Type: nl80211 HW Mode(s): 802.11bgn
          Hardware: unknown [Generic MAC80211]
          TX power offset: unknown
          Frequency offset: unknown
Supports VAPs: yes PHY name: phy0

When the channel is set to "auto" and country "BR" it always jumps to channel 13.

At a first glance what you describe doesn't seem to be a bug.
AFAIK Brazil allows channels 1-13 whilst US only allows 1-11.
When country code of the AP is BR then it's fully ok that it chooses channel 13.
However devices wich only support US channels can not connect then.
This explanation is supported by your statement that only some devices (most likely with a US setting) can not connect.

Maybe you can change the Wifi country setting for these devices else you have to set a channel 1-11 manually.

Is strange to me that the AP "always" choose channel 13 with country code BR. This is a recent issue because in my settings the country code always was BR.
