WRT54GL wireless client mode dies after a while

I have a WRT54GL 1.1, connecting to various host routers(d-link, linksys, etc) using open wireless. Using WPA encryption appears to work fine for some tests on linksys-linksys. With an open connection with the last stable release of ...Russian I appear to lose my wireless signal after around 10 minutes of may be related to the amount of data transmitted possibly instead of time. I can use putty to ssh into the router and ifscan. No wireless hosts will show up. The strange thing is if I say ifup then a message will start in an infinite loop and update every 10 seconds or so. While this is happening, I can type ifscan and a list of wireless hosts will appear. If I type ifdown, the messages stop. But at that point if I do ifscan I will no longer see any hosts. The only way to get things working again is to hard reboot the router(push the reset button a few seconds or pull the plug) If I type reboot, I will not get the wireless connections again. This problem has happened with the two WRT54GL routers that I have. My friends don't want to void their warranties on the other routers.
