#18055 closed defect (fixed)

option txpower ignored

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: developers
Priority: highest Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: packages Version: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Keywords: txpower too high Cc:

Description

Barrier Breaker release - TP-Link TL-WR842N/ND v1.

In /etc/config/wireless:
config wifi-device 'radio0'
...

option txpower '5'

Accidentally I discovered with Freifunk-Status installed, that it reports 20db transmit power. I checked that through:

cat /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/power
20

Setting txpower with
iw phy phy0 set txpower fixed 15mBm

cat /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/power
20

Setting antenna_gain:
iw phy phy0 set antenna_gain 17
cat /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/power
3

This seems to work around it for the time being.

On a TL-WR1043ND v2 setting txpower works fine.

fixed in r43032, but you need to use iwinfo to get the tx power instead of debugfs.

Thank you, Felix.

"but you need to use iwinfo to get the tx power" --verbose --please.

Why? Because of the offset in some devices? i.e.: debugfs is not aware of the offset.
In other cases it would be correct?

debugfs only points to the internal variable of the tx power that it requested, and only when using the global one instead of the per-vif one. it is not a proper API.
the API that iwinfo leads to mac80211 requesting the current tx power from the driver.
