#17746 closed enhancement (not_a_bug)

please splitt "/etc/init.d/network" in to parts "core_network" and "setup_network"

Reported by: LipkeGu Owned by: developers
Priority: high Milestone: Chaos Calmer 15.05
Component: base system Version: Trunk
Keywords: Cc:

Description

is it able to splitt "network setup" in to parts? For example:

Core Network -> give minimal connection to wan and lan

  • bring up interfaces (lan + wan) (exept protocols like aiccu)
  • start dhcp-client for interfaces like wan
  • assign ip adresses to lan interfaces (br-lan)
  • start dropbear / Telnet (ONLY)

then the next part:

setup network (after "core-network" is started)

  • start DHCP and DNS Servers
  • start ntp services (client and Server)
  • bring up protocols like aiccu / gw6c etc...
  • start fireall (as last)

in this planning, we have core network started up and can start DHCP + DNS and time services, fireall and the protocols (ppp)

also the nagging bug with wrong system time for aiccu or other protocols will be fixed :) when dns + DHCP services are up and running...

also the "3 times switch restart action will be avoided!"

  • Resolution set to not_a_bug
  • Status changed from new to closed

I think this proposal would create more problems than it would solve:

  • There is no guarantee that there is a "lan" or "wan" interface, the user might have a completely different configuration
  • There is no clear definition of "core network", or that DHCP and DNS is really bound to it.
  • Simply splitting the boot into two phases is too arbitrary and limited with more complex configurations, some interfaces may not be available at all times.

ok :)

Add a hotplug event, "goodtime", then make those time dependant protocols and services fire after have good time ;)
I use to always see in the log "Time change detected...", a hook should be there.
