#15303 new enhancement

x86_64 package repository

Reported by: aik.fiend@… Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: packages Version: Trunk
Keywords: Cc:

Description

doesn't exist there: http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ but there is an option "Targer->x86_64" in "make menuconfig" and "make kernel_menuconfig", please add it, otherwise you can build openwrt trunk for x86_64, but you can't install packages from repo http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/x86_64, and you need to build packages with "M" option and create local repo - it's a hard way.

Well ofcourse there would need to be working repo aventually for x86_64 target, but when you are compiling image yourself it is meant for you to also select the packages you need, not to rely on external repo anyways...

I don't agree with this:
"but when you are compiling image yourself it is meant for you to also select the packages you need, not to rely on external repo anyways..."
Because:

  1. There are sources for other platforms, and there are package repositories for other platforms too, but for x86_64 they absent.
  2. If you want install another packages, that you don't build, you need to have package build system or build all packages at once. If any can build all packages at once, he or she may share packages with other to save time and resources for building.

  1. Ofcourse there are, as there are also compiled binaries for that exact revision that is available for download at that given time... The builder of the image is meant to also provide the packages to go with builded firmware... While some if not even most by quantity of packages does work between diffirent revisions, most KMODs and so on doesn't even work between revisions, so using "outside" repo is not good idea. And snapshots changes, if not daily, weekly... So building own firmware without also needed packages just doesn't mix together really...
  1. You can build only a package later too... You don't need to build _all_ the packages, but the ones you need.

So this is not matter of do you agree with me or not, it is by design, like it or not :)
