TP-LINK TL-WDR4300/XBox 360S Wireless connection issue - Attitude Adjustment

Reported by: tobrienott Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Attitude Adjustment 12.09.1
Component: packages Version: Attitude Adjustment 12.09
Keywords: Cc:

Description

Configuration:

  • TP-LINK TL-WDR4300 - Version 1.3
  • XBox 360S with built-in Wireless support (G and 2GHz N).
  • OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment 12.09 / LuCI 0.11.1 Release (0.11.1) Kernel Version 3.3.8

Problem:
As reported in this Gargoyle forum thread (http://www.gargoyle-router.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3711) the XBox 360 on my home network cannot connect to the OpenWrt/TL-WDR4300 combination when running in Wireless GN mode. The stock TP-Link firmware had no issues supporting the XBox.

When I downgrade the router to use MAC80211 802.11bgn instead of MAC80211 802.11an, the XBox connects with no issues.

Following the instructions at http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/devel/debugging I installed tcpdump on the router, and captured management traffic for the two scenarios. I've filtered the related captures to only show traffic to and from the XBox.

If there is additional debugging, I'm willing to assist capturing additional data.

Same issue with a TL-WDR3600

Every devices work using BGN wireless except xbox 360 slim. To make it work, I need to set the wireless to G only.

Solution found on TL-WDR3600:
To follow standards and use N, you have to use WPA2 + AES

FYI, my wireless N network is set to use WPA2 + AES, so the suggestion above doesn't help. On the 2.4 GHz band, I'm on Channel-9, which isn't used by my neighbors. This is what my wireless status shows:
Encryption: WPA2 PSK (CCMP)
Channel: 9 (2.452 GHz) | Tx-Power: 20 dBm
Signal: -59 dBm | Noise: -90 dBm
Bitrate: 51.0 Mbit/s | Country: CA

Same problem here on WDR3600, Xbox will only connect to G mode only configured mode.

FYI, I upgraded to the Barrier Breaker 14.07, r42625 release, and I now have Wireless N connectivity to the XBox 360S.

This release seems like it is working much better on the TL-WDR4300; kudos to the team! From my perspective, this issue is closed.
