#13476 closed defect (worksforme)

[IPv6] Custom DNS servers ignored

Reported by: ipv6plsfix@… Owned by: cyrus
Priority: normal Milestone: Chaos Calmer 15.05
Component: packages Version: Trunk
Keywords: ipv6 dns custom wbmr buffalo italia r36569 Cc: cyrus@…

Buffalo WBMR-HP-G300H
Openwrt trunk r36569
ISP: Telecom Italia

I added the google ipv6 dns under Network -> Interfaces -> WAN -> Edit -> Advanced Settings -> Unchecked dns by peer and use custom dns.

My ipv6 works fine but it doesn't use my custom dns instead use the isp dns.

Did I do something wrong?

Please post your settings from /etc/config/network especially the wan and wan6 interface configuration. Also please tell us which of your ISP DNS-servers is used in error, the IPv4 or the IPv6 one.

Good morning cyrus!

config interface 'wan'

option ifname 'nas0'
option proto 'pppoe'
option peerdns '0'
option username 'adsl@…'
option password 'IPV6@alice6'
option ipv6 '1'
option dns '2001:4860:4860::8888 2001:4860:4860::8844'

config interface 'wan6'

option ifname '@wan'
option proto 'dhcpv6'

From nslookup and LUCI I confirmed that I use these DNS:

DNS 1: 2001:4b18:3050:916f::53:c002
DNS 2: 2001:4b18:3050:916f::53:c001

Could you please try to put the "option peerdns 0" inside the wan6 interface-section as well? If you put it in the wan-interface it will most likely only effect IPv4 DNS servers.

Now I can't see what DNS server I'm using from luci (both IPv4 and IPv6)

from nslookup it says:

Server predefinito: UnKnown
Address: fdc7:8ee8:2b3e::1 (who is it?)

Ah I see can you please move the option dns line to the wan6 interface as well. Forgot to mention that, sorry.

Ok, I did it.

Now it uses google ipv6 dns servers :)

DNS 1:
DNS 2:
Connected: 0h 4m 9s

DNS 1: 2001:4860:4860::8888
DNS 2: 2001:4860:4860::8844
Connected: 0h 3m 52s

It seems fine.

from nslookup:

Server predefinito: UnKnown
Address: 2a01:2003:1:2c66::1 (router's ipv6)

How could I check if it really use Google IPv6 DNS?

  • Resolution set to worksforme
  • Status changed from assigned to closed

Hmm you could check the file /tmp/ on your router and if you are really paranoid you could install tcpdump and check your outgoing traffic.

Thank you curys.

Should I file a report to LUCI devs to add an option for add custom ipv6 dns in the wan6 interface section?
