Mikrotik RB493G: initramfs image missing in binary firmware releases

Reported by: renne Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: base system Version:
Keywords: Cc: rene@…

Description

To flash the Mikrotik Routerboard RB493G with OpenWRT an initramfs image has to be booted via TFTP. That initramfs image exists for 12.09-beta2 (http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09-beta2/ar71xx/nand/openwrt-ar71xx-nand-vmlinux-initramfs.elf), but not for RC1, RC2 and todays main AA release.

Please add the initramfs image to simplify flashing RB493G boards with OpenWRT.

Whats preventing you from using the beta2 image to flash them?

If I remind well, 12.09-beta2 doesn't support the newer batches with Toshiba-NAND, yet - which means you can't flash them.

I agree having a openwrt-ar71xx-nand-vmlinux-initramfs.elf for my new RB493G would make things easier. beta2 works via netboot. However final gives me a kernel panic via netboot. I am assuming I can install beta2 and then upgrade to final. Is this right?

Yes and no. You cannot upgrade anything on the RB493G. If you want to update to a newer release, you have to save the settings, create a list of installed packages, erase the flash, boot an initramfs-image, install OpenWrt via wget2nand, install all missing packages and restore the saved configuration. You cannot use wget2nand from a system running from NAND but only from a system booted via TFTP.

For the first installation of OpenWrt connect the RB493G via console, reboot it, erase the NAND flash, switch to boot via network, provide beta2 (openwrt-ar71xx-nand-vmlinux-initramfs.elf) via TFTP, login to OpenWrt and install 12.09 main release via wget2nand.
