#1315 closed defect (worksforme)

pppd fails to reconnect with persist option

Reported by: MMCM Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: base system Version:
Keywords: Cc:

Description

When the connection is broken, for whatever reason, pppd (client side) tries to reconnect and produces following messages repeatedly, until killed manually:

Feb 3 04:00:35 pppd[27388]: Serial connection established.
Feb 3 04:00:35 pppd[27388]: Using interface ppp0
Feb  3 04:00:35 pppd[27388]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/1
Feb 3 04:01:06 pppd[27388]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Feb 3 04:01:06 pppd[27388]: Connection terminated.
Feb 3 04:01:07 pppd[27388]: Modem hangup

On the server side, there are no log entries generated by the reconnect attempts.

This happens on three routers running Kamikaze 2.4 & 2.6 kernels.

Persistent connections do work on an WL-500gx using Olegs 1.9.2.7-7e firmware, which uses ppp 2.4.2 (I think Oleg downgraded from 2.4.3 to 2.4.2 because of bugs).

Maybe it's time to give the new 2.4.4 version a try?

What's new in ppp-2.4.4.
************************

* Pppd will now run /etc/ppp/ip-pre-up, if it exists, after creating
the ppp interface and configuring its IP addresses but before
bringing it up. This can be used, for example, for adding firewall
  rules for the interface.

* Lots of bugs fixed, particularly in the area of demand-dialled and
  persistent connections.

* The rp-pppoe plugin now accepts any interface name (that isn't an
existing pppd option name) without putting "nic-" on the front of
it, not just eth*, nas*, tap* and br*.

Problem solved :-)

Wrong way to start a pptp vpn connection:

pptp mypptpserver.com -- file /etc/ppp/options.mypptpserver

Correct:

pppd file /etc/ppp/options.mypptpserver

and add the following line to /etc/ppp/options.mypptpserver

pty '/usr/sbin/pptp mypptpserver.com --nolaunchpppd'
