Atheros router freezes in less than 5 min after boot up on receiving packets on ethernet

Hi,

I've set up a mesh network based on open80211s, openwrt attitude adjustment 12.09 (r35531), Ubiquiti Bullet5 router with atheros ar2313 processor and 16 MB RAM. The routers are operating in bridged mode where in wlan0 is bridged with eth0.

Scenario:
Router R1 sends data to router R0. R1 is connected to an embedded computer which sends about fifty 100-byte packets per second on Ethernet. R1 parses the packets in a user-space application and sends them over the wlan0 to the router R0.

Observation:
40% of the times the whole system is restarted the R1 freezes and does not respond even to the serial terminal.
So, I then tested the setup by disconnecting the embedded computer from the router R1. I had the packets being created in the user-space application on R1 and sent over to R0 on wlan0. The router R1 never freezes in this case.

Conclusion:
wlan0 works fine. But, the router freezes on receiving packets on Ethernet. The weird thing is it does not always freeze. 60% of the cases it works fine even 20 min after boot up. In the other 40% cases it freezes in less than 5 min after boot up.

i'am also effected. sometimes a node reaches an uptime of 36 hours, sometimes only some minutes. if i only do wireless transfers, there a no problems.

doing an experiment, which works for now: enforces the phy to 10mbit/halfduplex:

Hey Bastian,

I've tried using your cron script to configure Ethernet at 10baseT. But the router still freezes in less than 5 min or runs fine for hours (15 hours is the highest I've tested).
It freezes for 40% of times that I've tested.

Did it work for you? Any other ways to approach this problem?

I also doesnt help here:

I think we have to put some printk's into the driver of ethernet-phy "ar231x_eth"
and use a serial console to make sure it really has something todo with the phy.
I have a unit for this action here. we also need a testcase for enforcing a freeze,
maybe with netperf-traffic.

Can you compile an image older then r32060, and see if it works?

even with enforced 10baseT mode if ethernet phy, i can enforce a reboot via

root@atheros:~ /etc/init.d/netserver start
root@atheros:~ netperf -H $NEXTROUTER_LANIP -t UDP_STREAM

with TCP_STREAM/TCP_MAERTS there are no problems, speed is than ~5mbit.
can somebody confirm this? my device has 32mb RAM so i dont exspect any
memory/oom-relation things. revision r32060 here. will try a recent build soon.

sadly i cannot reproduce it with r35899 / kernel 3.8.2 -
no matter if UDP or TCP or the direction, it just works.
now i wait, till the box is dead...

Hey,

I reproduced the problem using iperf by sending 100 Mbps traffic over the Ethernet. I could not reproduce the problem using iperf with Ethernet in 10baseT though. Also, I'm not very sure that I reproduced the same problem as before, where in, the router freezes with no output on serial. Now, its outputting the crash dump infinitely and it would not stop nor respond to user input on serial terminal. I used OpenWrt r35531 attitude adjustment Ubiquiti bullet5 for the test. Following is the output on serial terminal. It looks like the device is running out of memory. I'm guessing there is a memory leak in Ethernet driver or it is buffering too many packets because of low wireless data rate compared to Ethernet. Not sure how to debug it though. Any ideas?
