Unstable wireless speed for WDS with WR1043ND and WR941NDv3 connected

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: packages Version: Trunk

Description

I have been having this problem for all trunk builds back to a few months ago. I am using version r31673 right now. A WR1043ND is set as the WDS AP and WR941ND is set as the WDS STA. Set up an extra AP for each router to allow wireless devices to connect. The maximum speed of WDS is more or less at about 50Mbps. However, the connection can only be stable for not more than 15 mins. The maximum speed will fluctuate and the minimax speed can be as low as a few hundred kbps. The maximum speed will sometimes be resumed maybe after an hour. During the speed fluctuation, I found that the MCS kept changing rapidly (unlike when the maximum speed is steady for which the MCS is hovering around 11 to 13 and changes only once a few seconds). While the wireless speed of my android phone connected to the access point of WR1043ND doesn't seem to be affected at all. Please be noted that my place is crowded with wireless networks. I can scan more than 10 SSIDs. Just want to mention that this problem for Backfire 10.03.1 is less serious. I just need to restart the wireless of the WDS AP once a few days. Just like to let you know that the WDS of r31673 is almost unusable for my situation (a noisy wireless environment?). I attached the wireless config files for both 1043 and 941 for reference.

Would like to add an observation to to the reported problem. Played with the android app, Wifi Analayzer, tonight. Whenever I have the speed varying problem, the wireless signals of both virtual APs seem to "drop out" repeatly. In Channel graph mode, the signal strength drops to zero and moves back up again until I restart the wifi of either router. The signal strength will then be steady again. The signal strength of the WDS AP is stable throughout the whole period though.

Would like to amend the observation above. During speed fluctuation, only the signal of the virtual AP in the WDS STA (i.e. WR941ND for my case) keeps dropping out. The signal in the WDS AP side is more or less stable.

Hi,

latest patches improved the situation significantly. but i can still get the wzr hp g300nh into the state where the rate drops hard and it doesnt recover.

i do this by watching HD tv over wlan and for worsening the situation i trigger iperf ... my rate drops from 35-40mbits downto 4mbit and doesnt recover even without traffic

hope the info helps

Installed the latest version, r31696, and the WDS seemed to be able to maintain a stable connection longer. Don't know if it's a coincident, the speed dropped only after about 2 hours (not 15 mins as reported in the first post). Also found that the behaviour in the speed lost is a bit different. For r3167, the speed just dropped to a low level instantly. For r31696, the speed of WDS seemed to "struggle" for a minute (kept going up and down at a higher speed) and it finally gave up and stayed at low level. I was also streaming video through the WDS for testing, during the minute struggle, the video played smooth and the speed fluctuation was not noticeable.

Surprisingly, it's the signal of the WDS AP has drop outs. Both the signals of the VAP and WDS AP have drop outs. The VAP of the WDS STA is relatively stable this time.

Would like to report that the WDS of r31696 is actually less stable that r31673. The WDS was stable for two hours only after the fresh installation of r31696. After that, the speed of the WDS keeps at low level (fluctuates around 5 Mbps) most the time. For r31673, the speed will resume to about 50Mbps and last for not more than 15 mins. With r31696, the stable connection only lasts for less than 1 min after restarting wifi (by entering the "wifi" command in the SSH console). Please let me know if more information is needed before the firmware of the routers is reverted back to 10.03.1. By the way, would like to express my appreciation of the continuous development of this fantastic firmware.

The speed of WDS is still unstable for trunk version r32145. The maximum speed is stable for about an hour after every restart of the wifi of either router. r32145 is an improvement compared to r31696, but it has the same problem as r31673. Backfire 10.03.1 is usable for which the routers are only needed to be reset once a few days. Backfire 10.03.2 pre-release is much more stable for which the maximum speed of WDS is stable for about two weeks.

please try r32159

Would like to report that r32176 was tested for 10 hours by streaming two TV programs via the WDS. No dropout happened.
