This messages also appear if the driver is working, so they're unrelated to your issue

So can I determine what is the reason for the broadcom driver not initializing correctly in the Asus WL-520GU?

Well, I assumed wrong. The driver does initialize and the after configuring a certain ssid, that ssid is broadcast and detected by wireless clients. However, they fail to associate with the configured ap, whether the ap is configured with encryption or not.
