Restore doesn't Re-Install opkg packages

Reported by: scotepi Owned by: developers
Priority: normal Milestone: Barrier Breaker 14.07
Component: packages Version: Trunk
Keywords: backup restore opkg packages Cc: openwrt@…

I created a backup of nightly 2011-09-20 using luci, then I installed 2011-09-29 sysupgrade without savings the configuration. When I restored the backup using luci all packages I had installed were listed with opkg list-installed but none of them were really installed.

Steps to Reproduce

  • Created a backup file with luci a.tar.gz
  • Flash a sysupgrade via luci without saving configuration
  • Telnet in and set root password and opkg update; opkg install luci; /etc/init.d/uhttpd start; /etc/init.d/uhttpd enable
  • go to and restore a.tar.gz
  • wait for reboot
  • Go to either System -> Software in luci or run opkg list-installed and see that everything you had before is 'installed'
  • Say I had samba installed before, there is no /etc/init.d/samba or any other non config files associated with samba

Expected Behavior
After restoring the backup file, maybe after the reboot all opkg packages that were installed before would be reinstalled.

My System
OS: Windows 7 x64 SP1
Browser: Chrome 15.0.874 Beta
Router: Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH - rtl8366rb switch
OpenWrt: OpenWrt Firmware Attitude Adjustment (r28314) / LuCI Trunk (trunk+svn7576)

doh.. it didn't even show any of my old packages in the opkg list-installed so I guess this bug can be moved up to the backup process, not the restore process.

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

backing up and restoring installed packages is not feasible, as it likely includes incompatible kernel modules, as well as libc or core API library changes can render old userspace packages incompatible.

This can easily lead to non booting devices.
