Hi,

I also experience this problem on a WRT54G, revision 3.1, using current OpenWRT trunk. opkg is pretty much unusable because it keeps crashing the machine :(.

are you using a custom build or the snapshot build from the same day?

comment:4 Changed 6 years ago by anonymous

it was the snapshot build from 21.9.2011

no news?

I suspect that opkg simply eats up too much memory. I've taken a look around at the source code, and it seems that when opkg is started, it creates a huge hash table that contains information about all the packages it knows about, which doesn't really work on a device where so little memory and so many packages are available.

A possible workaround is to not let opkg know about the available packages, i. e. don't run "opkg update". Like that, it is at least possible to download packages by hand and install them with opkg. Of course, that is a PITA as one also has to resolve dependencies by hand. But at least it works...
